Program of Study

Listed below are the classes and major projects completed as part of the requirements for the Master of Education degree in the SLM program. My goal was to gain the information, both theoretical and practical, essential to my work as an elementary school media specialist. At the beginning of the program, I felt at quite a disadvantage due to my lack of direct teaching experience. I came away with exceptional, standards-meeting products that are immediately applicable to my future position. Not only do I have the necessary documents for the foundation of my media center services (PDEP and Selection Policy), I also gained valuable experience with an order, media center website, curriculum mapping, collaborative planning, and literacy information skills. The real-world experience through my internship, field experiences, and my job as a media clerk put me in a unique position to be offered the media specialist position at Partee Elementary for the Fall of 2007. Other than becoming more familiar with certain Gwinnett-specific policies and procedures, and keeping up with current trends in the curriculum and children's literature, I feel I am quite well prepared to serve my learning community. When Dr. Fitzgerald stated in our first class meeting that media specialists need to have a servant's heart, I knew I was in the right place! The accredited SLM program at UGA exceeded my expectations. I am grateful to have been a part of the wonderful group of colleagues in Cohort 5.
